David J. Beech: Research Lab
Training opportunities
The lab is keen to educate and encourage talented individuals who have a serious interest in research and its associated activities. If you are interested in any of the opportunities below, your first action should be to make informal contact with David Beech by e-mail, attaching a copy of your curriculum vitae.
Postgraduate degrees (PhD, MD, MSc)
These opportunities are possible for individuals with a high quality first degree (BSc, medical or equivalent). Projects relate to the lab’s on-going research interests. The specifics of a particular project would be developed with David Beech.
Although it is sometimes possible to obtain a place at short notice, it is generally advisable to apply 1 year in advance and preferably even earlier if you are from overseas (a non-UK/EU citizen).
You may be eligible to apply for a studentship allocated to the Faculty (i.e. funding to cover your fees and living expenses) or it may be appropriate to apply to an external organization for funding (e.g. BHF). If you have access to funding from an industrial partner, this would usually increase your chance of obtaining a studentship. If you are not a UK or EU citizen, you may be able to apply for an overseas scholarship, or you may wish to fund your own studies. Applying early is important, as is prior experience of a project in a research lab (see below).
Undergraduate vacation projects
These projects normally last for 8-12 weeks, full-time, and come with a stipend to cover your living expenses. Usually, students take this opportunity at the end of their 2nd year of study. Strong performance in prior undergraduate assessments is normally required for entry. Please apply well in advance (e.g. November/December) for a project starting in June/July.
General undergraduate student opportunities – throughout the year
Committed undergraduate students may be considered for part-time research projects or basic laboratory work throughout the year. Such activity does not contribute to a university degree or involve assessment, but is intended to provide experience of a research environment. Informal enquiries should be made to David Beech directly.
The lab’s record on training
To-date the lab has supervised 33 undergraduate research projects (10 weeks full-time each), 9 vacation projects funded by external scholarships, and 6 visiting project students from China, EU or India (3-9 months each). It has also supervised 25 PhD/MD students and 16 postdoctoral scientists. All of the students have submitted their theses on time and passed after minor corrections.
