Research Area

Control of the cardiovascular system

Details

My research focuses on investigating the mechanistic basis of cardiovascular control in health and disease. I have a particular interest in afferent nerve endings in the heart and lungs and how these fibres help regulate the cardiovascular system. Disruption of signals from these sensory nerves In heart failure may account for the detrimental shift in autonomic balance found in this condition. Mechanisms which could lead to an effective enhancement of afferent activity may prove to be of clinical relevance. As part of my research I use rodent models of hypertrophy and heart failure combined with techniques in nerve recording, telemetry, cardiac pressure volume loops pressure myography and exercise. I also have an interest in the adaptations found to hypoxia and have ongoing collaborations with colleagues from the UK , Peru, USA and Canada.
