Research Area

Cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disorders and related neurodegenerative diseases

Details

My research program is focused on understanding the underlying cellular, subcellular and molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders and related neurodegenerative diseases using in vivo mammalian systems as models of human pathophysiology. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these diseases is vital for the development of novel pharmacological agents with greater therapeutic potential.
My research interest also includes novel Laser engineering approaches for detection and quantification of functionalised metabolites/ biomarkers of these diseases. In collaboration with the Engineering Department and with the support of the BHRC funding, we have successfully completed ex-vivo ischemic brain tissue metabolite analysis, which has given us confidence to progress it to the next level of more in-depth in vivo studies using ischemic/thrombotic models. We have also performed laser spectroscopic analysis of metabolites conjugated with rare-earth ions which enable strong light emission through skin when excited with an external laser source for providing novel pathways for non-invasive transcutaneous detection and imaging of metabolites. Currently, in collaboration with Professor Animesh Jha and Dr Gin Jose in the Institute for Materials Research I am working towards commercialization of these novel approaches.
